Drawing can be a powerful tool in online (or in-person) classes to differentiate, scaffold, and engage students in learning!
Either for winter of Christmas, here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a cartoon penguin!
Video has a voiceover or you can read the steps below.
What You’ll Need:
- Whiteboard
- Black marker
if you want to add color:
- Orange and Pink markers
- Red and Green markers (or whichever color(s) you want for the clothes)
How To Draw:
For the Body and Clothes
- Draw a circular head
- Color in the top part of the head
- Draw two small flippers
- Leave a small gap between the head and the arms if you want to include a scarf
- Draw around body about the width of the flippers (you can also make it wider like my picture)
- Add the scarf OR leave it blank for the student to choose and continue to the next step
- With the orange marker, draw two oval-shaped feet and a triangular beak
- Erase part of the head and add the hat OR leave it blank to draw during class
- Optional: color in the body black leaving a large white circle in the middle
For The Face
- Draw two large-ish circular eyes with a little distance between each other
- Draw two circles in the upper-right hand corner of the eyes
- Draw two small circles in the lower left hand corner of the eyes
- Color in the surrounding white area
- With the pink marker, scribble two lines to make blushing cheeks
How to Use As a Reward System:

I personally draw the head and body before class and leave space to add during class:
- A scarf
- A hat
- Shoes
- A face
other times I added some fish for lessons that I knew I wouldn’t have a lot of extra time as those don’t take long to draw at all!
In my experience, the scarf is difficult to erase if the body is colored in, so you either choose not to color in the body or draw a black outline of the scarf ahead of time and let the student choose which color(s) to color it in!
Questions you can ask:
- What is this? What are these?
- Which colors do you want on the scarf?
- What is he wearing?
- Do you wear a scarf/hat in the winter?
- Do you know what animal this is? Where does it live? (many of my students didn’t know ‘penguin’ so that can be a great extension).
Let me know if you try it out!
